Gottfried Wilhelm von Leibniz, the great mathematician and son of Leipzig, is looking again at us during our event in Machine Learning and Data Mining in Pattern Recognition MLDM 2007. He can be proudly on what we have reached in this area so far. We have a great research program this year and can conclude that idea further carries fruits.
This is the fifth event of MLDM in Pattern Recognition held in Leipzig (www.mldm.de).
Today, there are many international meetings which are titled machine learning and data mining, whose topics are text mining, knowledge discovery, and applications. This meeting from the first time has focused on aspects of machine learning and data mining in pattern recognition problems. We planed to re-organise classical and well established pattern recognition paradigms from view points of machine learning and data mining. Though it was a challenging program in late '90's, the idea has brought new starting points in pattern recognition and effects to the other areas such as cognitive computer vision.
For this edition the Program Committee received 258 submissions from 37 countries (see Fig. 1).
To master this big number of papers was a big challenge for the reviewers and only to master with additional reviewer. Every paper became thoroughly reviewed by the reviewers and every author received a sound certificate about his submitted work.
After the peer-review process, we accepted 66 high-quality papers for oral presentation that are included in this proceeding book. The topics range from the classical topic within MLDM such as classification, feature selection and extraction, clustering and support-vector machines, frequent and common item set mining and structural data mining.
